On the first weekend of February, in each year dating back to the 1600s, Sámi traders gather at the Jokkmokk Market in Jokkmokk to trade their goods internationally.  The Sámi had trade links with Norwegians, Russians and European countries, and mostly traded furs, hides, and reindeer leather products.

Among the most celebrated of trade beads, “Russian Blues” likely originated in Czechoslovakia. Russian traders may have purchased them directly from traders in Europe, or possibly from the Hudson Bay Company. From the 15th to the 20th century, traders carried European glass beads across the world, and used the beads as a form of currency.

“Jokkmokk” is a one of a kind Sámi inspired  necklace and features 17  small antique “Russian Blue” trade beads incorporated into the six double strand antiqued silver pewter braid. The reindeer leather is also cobalt blue, and features a hand carved reindeer antler button toggle closure.
